c-section pictures

Ebony was having a really difficult time in labor, and the nightmare situation started to happen.  One pup came partially out (a boy that looked just like his later-to-come brothers), and I was not able to save him, despite trying every trick in the book.  It was absolutely horrible.

We ended up driving like crazy over to our Lee's Summit vet, where she was given a shot of oxytocin, but that had no effect and I had them put her under for a c-section.  (Above is Melissa doing just that.)  It's a good thing, too, or we would have most likely ended up losing everyone including Ebony.

Apparently her colon was might have been kind of wrapped around one or both (I don't quite recall) horns of her uterus, and the base of her uterus was connected to the colon on one side and to the bladder on the other side.  It couldn't be said for certain at the time whether the latter condition was congenital or was created from scar tissue somewhere along the way, but either way, I had never heard of such a thing before, so I'll have to do some research on it.  Needless to say, even though Ebony absolutely adores having puppies, when she is fully recovered, she will be spayed and have to resign herself to simply being an aunt to future puppies born to our other ladies here.

It took awhile for two of the three pups to come around, but they did come around, and let me tell you, a little newborn squeak is the most wonderful sound in the universe.

Here I am talking to one of the babies as she was taking some of her first breaths.

Ebony was still somewhat groggy from the anesthesia but was relieved to be with her beautiful get.
