⇦ coats, colors, & patterns   welcome eridox index   the sausage link message board   the woofarium chatrooms   eridox about us   our hot dogs hotdog stats adults our bratwursts bratwurst stats puppies   frankfurter fotos hunt pics   general info history of wieners   teckel terms   coats, colors, & patterns   genetic disorders   nutrition info   of interest current genetics studies   genetic & phenotypic testing   unrelated book research      other resources dachsie links   site references   contact me   nose coloration If you have a good, clear picture of any of these on a dachshund that I can use on this page, please let me know! butterfly nose Part(s) of the nose completely lacks pigment.  This is usually caused by parti-coloring, dappling, and/or double dappling. dudley nose The entire nose completely lacks pigment.  The color will be pinkish or reddish because of the blood showing through the skin.  This is sometimes caused by parti-coloring, dappling, double dappling, and/or ESPS, but it is often caused by unrelated lack of pigmentation. breeding recommendations If your dog has a butterfly nose or dudley nose, it is probably best not to breed it, as poor pigmentation / lack of pigmentation will be passed on to future generations.  There are three basic reasons why breeding poor/lacking skin (including nose) pigmentation is not recommended: - Sunburn, and therefore skin cancer, can occur on the nose if owners allow their dogs outside very much, whether for pet purposes or working purposes.  No or little pigmentation = no or little UV protection. - It is thought that lack of pigment on the nose would suggest lack of pigment in the nose, and for the same reasons as dappling/parti-coloring deafness/hearing deficiency, the dog wouldn't be able to smell things as well as his pigmented-nosed counterpart. - There are a number of other reasons why a dog could lack pigment on the nose, and apart from being caused by the dappling, parti-coloring, and ESPS patterns, most of the reasons are not particlularly good.
